James A. C. McDermott
Director and Chairman
Jim has decades of executive experience in the energy industry. He is Managing Partner and Managing Director of US Renewables Group, a private equity firm that he co-founded. Prior to this, Jim worked as a private equities investor for Prudential’s Private Capital Group. As an entrepreneur, Jim has launched and run three software startups—Spoke Software, Archive, and Stamps.com—and invested in numerous others, among them Practice Technologies and MagnaDrive. He started his career as a public power banker with Credit Suisse’s Municipal Finance Group in New York, where he gained utilities experience working with Southern California Public Power Authority, Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, Washington Public Power Supply System, and several other West Coast municipal utilities. He holds a B.A. in philosophy from Colorado College and an M.B.A. from the Anderson School at UCLA.

Timothy L. Newell
Director
Tim has more than 20 years of private equity, investment banking and government experience. Currently, he is a Senior Advisor to US Renewables Group, a California-based private equity firm that is among the largest investment firms in the U.S. focused exclusively on renewable energy. Previously, Tim has served as a founding Managing Director for DFJ Element, a clean technology affiliate fund of Draper Fisher Jurvetson, and as a founder of New Resource Bank, the first U.S. commercial bank dedicated to financing sustainable businesses. He also served as a founding board member of the California Clean Energy Fund. In the public sector, Tim has held a number of positions with the U.S. government including Deputy Director for Policy in the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, under the Clinton Administration, and Washington Staff Director for then-U.S. Representative Norman Mineta representing California’s Silicon Valley. Tim holds a B.A. in Economics Brown University.
Nate Redmond
Director
Nate brings to Fulcrum's Board of Directors deep experience as an investor, entrepreneur and strategic advisor with specialized knowledge of the clean technology industry. He is also a Partner at Rustic Canyon, one of Southern California's largest venture capital firms. Prior to joining Rustic Canyon, Nate partnered with Harvard Business School professor Clayton Christensen for principal investment in companies facing disruptive changes and to advise technology industry leaders on creating new growth. As an entrepreneur, he founded Clariweb, an Internet software solution for data sharing between applications, and helped launch two other Internet companies. He began his career with the Boston Consulting Group as a consultant to technology firms on new product development and business strategy. Nate received his M.B.A. from the Harvard Business School and holds both a B.S.E. and M.S.E. from The University of Michigan College of Engineering, where he was an Entrepreneurial Fellow in the Engineering Global Leadership Honors Program.
Thomas Unterman
Director
Tom brings deep and distinguished experience to Fulcrum's Board of Directors. He is the founder and Managing Partner of Rustic Canyon, one of Southern California's largest venture capital firms. Prior to joining Rustic Canyon, Tom was Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer at Times Mirror Co. As an attorney, he was a partner in the law firms of Morrison & Foerster LLP, and Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe LLP. Tom is active in a number of civic organizations: he currently serves on the boards of The California Community Foundation, The Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art, The Public Library of Science, Heal the Bay and Pacific Community Ventures. He is a graduate of Princeton University and received his law degree from the University of Chicago.
